How this reading speed test works
Reading speed is usually expressed in words per minute (WPM): the number of words you read divided by the time it took, measured in minutes. This test does the counting and the timing for you. The passage has a known word count, and your device's clock records how long you spend between pressing Start reading and I'm done. The formula is simply WPM = words ÷ minutes.
For the result to be meaningful, read the way you normally would and only stop the timer once you have genuinely reached the end. Reading faster than usual to "win" inflates the number but tells you little — the optional comprehension check exists to keep you honest, because a high WPM with low understanding is not real reading.
Reading speed benchmarks
These ranges are common rules of thumb for adult silent reading of general material. Your own results will vary with the difficulty of the text and how familiar the topic is.
| Reader level | Words per minute | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Slow | Under 150 | Below the typical adult pace; common when reading aloud or unfamiliar, dense text. |
| Average | 200–300 | Where most adults land for everyday non-fiction, around 238 WPM on average. |
| Fast | 400+ | Strong silent reading with good comprehension of familiar material. |
| Speed reader | 600+ | Trained readers using techniques such as wider eye span and reduced subvocalization. |
Reference note: the often-quoted average of about 238 WPM applies to adult silent reading of non-fiction; reading aloud is typically slower, around 150 WPM.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good reading speed?
- For everyday non-technical material, a good reading speed is roughly 200 to 300 WPM with solid comprehension. The best speed is one that lets you understand and remember what you read, not just move your eyes quickly.
- How is reading speed (WPM) measured?
- Divide the number of words in a passage by the time you took to read it in minutes: WPM = words ÷ minutes. This test counts the words and times you, so you just read and stop the timer when you finish.
- What is the average reading speed?
- The average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction is commonly cited as about 238 WPM, with most readers between 200 and 300 WPM. Reading aloud is slower, typically around 150 WPM.
- How can I read faster?
- Reduce subvocalization, widen your eye span to take in groups of words, avoid unnecessary re-reading, and practise regularly with comfortable material — while checking that comprehension stays high.
- Does reading faster hurt comprehension?
- Up to a point faster reading can keep comprehension steady, but pushing well beyond your natural speed usually lowers understanding and retention. The optional comprehension check helps you find the right balance.
- How many words per minute is fast?
- Reading above about 400 WPM with good comprehension is generally considered fast, and trained speed readers may report more. Below roughly 150 WPM is on the slow side for an adult reading familiar material.
