Counts are rounded up and assume standard platform framing — a single straight wall with a single bottom plate and a double top plate. Headers, cripples, blocking, and wide or load-bearing openings need more material. Always confirm your local building code and span tables.

How this wall framing calculator works

Framing a wall starts with the field studs — the regularly spaced vertical members that carry the sheathing and drywall. To count them, divide the wall length by the stud spacing on-center and round up to get the number of stud bays, then add one extra stud for the far end of the wall. Spacing is measured centre-to-centre, so studs at 16 in on-center land at 16, 32 and 48 inches, which is exactly why standard 4 ft by 8 ft sheet goods break neatly on a stud.

That bare field count is only the start. Real walls need framing extras: each door or window opening needs a king stud and a jack (trimmer) on each side, so a simplified planning rule adds two studs per opening. Each corner and each spot where an interior partition tees into the wall needs extra studs to form a nailing surface, so add roughly two studs per corner, plus blocking where required. Finally, most walls use a single bottom plate and a double top plate, so the total plate length is the wall length times three; divide that by your plate stock length and round up to get the boards to buy.

Worked example: a 20 ft wall at 16 in on-center: bays = ceil(240 in ÷ 16 in) = 15, plus 1 end stud = 16 field studs. With 2 openings (+4) and 1 corner (+2) the total is 16 + 4 + 2 = 22 studs. Plate lumber = 20 ft × 3 = 60 ft; in 12 ft boards that is ceil(60 ÷ 12) = 5 plate boards (or four 16 ft boards).

Reference note: results are a planning estimate using standard platform framing, simplified. Headers, sills, cripple studs, fire blocking, corner style (three-stud vs California corner), and load-bearing or wide openings all change the real count. Always check your local building code and the relevant span tables before buying.

How many studs do I need?
For a single straight wall the basic count is the wall length ÷ stud spacing on-center, rounded up, plus one extra stud for the end of the wall. What is 16 inches on center?
On-center (OC) is the distance from the centre of one stud to the centre of the next. 16 in on-center is the most common residential spacing because it suits standard 4 ft × 8 ft sheet goods, which break evenly on studs at 16 and 48 inches. 24 in OC uses less lumber and suits many non-load-bearing or advanced-framing walls; 12 in OC is used where extra strength is needed.
How do I count studs for a wall?

How many extra studs for a door or window?
A simplified rule is to add two studs per opening for the king stud and one jack or trimmer on each side. In practice a wide opening uses two kings and two jacks plus cripple studs above and below and a header, so larger or load-bearing openings need more. The calculator adds two per opening as a baseline; add extra for wide openings, heavy headers and cripples.
What about corners and partitions?
Corners and the points where an interior wall meets this wall need extra studs to form a nailing surface for drywall and to tie the walls together. A traditional three-stud corner uses two or three studs, while California corners and drywall clips reduce that. As a rule of thumb add about two studs per corner or partition, plus blocking where sheets meet or fire blocking is required.
How much plate lumber do I need?
Most walls use a single bottom plate and a double top plate, so total plate length is the wall length × 3. Divide that by your plate stock length — 8, 10, 12 or 16 ft boards — and round up to get the boards to buy. For a 20 ft wall that is 60 ft of plate, which is four 16 ft boards or five 12 ft boards.
