How this paver calculator works
Pavers are sold by quantity, so the job is to work out how many pavers cover your patio or walkway. The principle is simple: pavers needed = project area ÷ the area of one paver, rounded up. First find the area you are paving by multiplying its length by its width — or type a direct area if you have already measured it. Then find the area of a single paver by multiplying its length by its width. Dividing one by the other gives the bare number of pavers, before any allowance for cuts.
Two things make the estimate realistic. First, units: paver sizes are usually given in inches while patios are measured in feet, so everything must be converted to a common unit first — the calculator handles imperial and metric for you. Second, the waste allowance: edge pavers must be cut, the offcuts are usually too small to reuse, and the odd paver breaks — so you add a percentage (typically 10%, more for diagonal, running-bond or herringbone layouts) and round up. The pavers-per-square-foot figure is handy for quick checks: a 4 in × 8 in paver covers 32 of the 144 square inches in a square foot, so it takes 4.5 of them per square foot.
Reference note: results are a planning estimate that assume simple straight rectangular layouts with no complex cuts or patterns. Borders, soldier courses, circular and herringbone designs, curves and obstacles all increase real waste — add extra for them.
