The number of pavers you need is simply the project area ÷ the area of one paver, rounded up, plus a waste allowance for cuts and breakages (10% is typical). How this paver calculator works

Pavers are sold by quantity, so the job is to work out how many pavers cover your patio or walkway. The principle is simple: pavers needed = project area ÷ the area of one paver, rounded up. First find the area you are paving by multiplying its length by its width — or type a direct area if you have already measured it. Then find the area of a single paver by multiplying its length by its width. Dividing one by the other gives the bare number of pavers, before any allowance for cuts.

Two things make the estimate realistic. First, units: paver sizes are usually given in inches while patios are measured in feet, so everything must be converted to a common unit first — the calculator handles imperial and metric for you. Second, the waste allowance: edge pavers must be cut, the offcuts are usually too small to reuse, and the odd paver breaks — so you add a percentage (typically 10%, more for diagonal, running-bond or herringbone layouts) and round up. The pavers-per-square-foot figure is handy for quick checks: a 4 in × 8 in paver covers 32 of the 144 square inches in a square foot, so it takes 4.5 of them per square foot.

Worked example: a patio 10 ft × 12 ft is 120 square feet. A 4 in × 8 in paver covers 32 sq in = 0.222 sq ft. So you need 120 ÷ 0.222 = 540 → 540 pavers with no waste (about 4.5 per sq ft). Adding a 10% waste allowance gives 540 × 1.10 = 594 → 594 pavers. For two identical patios, double it to 1,188.

Reference note: results are a planning estimate that assume simple straight rectangular layouts with no complex cuts or patterns. Borders, soldier courses, circular and herringbone designs, curves and obstacles all increase real waste — add extra for them. Measure carefully, split irregular areas into rectangles, add a sensible waste allowance, and confirm coverage on the paver packaging before buying.

How many pavers do I need?
Divide the project area you are paving by the area of a single paver, then round up and add a waste allowance for cuts and breakages. That is the patio or walkway area divided by the area of one paver, plus extra for waste. Enter your project and paver dimensions above and the calculator returns the count both before and after waste.
How do I calculate paver area?
Multiply the paver length by its width. A 4 in × 8 in brick paver covers 32 square inches, which is 32 ÷ 144 ≈ 0.222 square feet. Make sure the paver size and the project area use the same unit before dividing, or let the calculator convert inches, feet, metres and centimetres for you.
How much waste should I add?
About 10 percent is standard for a simple rectangular patio laid in a straight pattern. Add more — around 15 percent for diagonal or running-bond layouts and up to 20 percent for herringbone, circular or heavily curved designs — because every cut wastes part of a paver and you want spares for future repairs.
What size pavers are common?
The 4 in × 8 in brick paver is the most common, but 6×6, 6×9, 8×8, 12×12 and large-format 12×24 pavers are all widely sold. Square pavers are simple to lay, while rectangular bricks suit running-bond and herringbone patterns. Use the size presets above or type any custom dimensions.
How many 4x8 pavers per square foot?
A 4 in × 8 in paver covers 32 square inches. One square foot is 144 square inches, so 144 ÷ 32 = 4.5 pavers per square foot. For a 100 sq ft patio that is about 450 pavers before waste. The calculator shows pavers per square foot for whatever size you enter.
Do patterns need more pavers?
Yes. Herringbone, basketweave, circular and diagonal layouts require more cuts around the edges, and the offcuts are usually too small to reuse, so they waste more than a straight grid. Borders and soldier courses add pavers too. For these designs increase the waste percentage — 15 to 20 percent is a sensible range — rather than buying the bare calculated number.
