How this roof area calculator works

The area a roof covers — its footprint in plan view — is smaller than the actual surface of the sloping roof. To get the true roof area you start from the footprint (length × width) and stretch it by the slope of the roof. That stretch factor is the slope multiplier, and it is the same number builders use as the rafter-length multiplier.

For a pitch written as rise-in-12, the slope multiplier is √(rise² + 144) / 12 — more generally √(rise² + run²) / run. Multiplying the footprint area by this factor gives the actual roof surface for a simple gable, where the two planes together cover the whole footprint. Divide that area by 100 to get roofing squares, add a waste allowance (about 10% for cuts, starter and ridge courses), and figure roughly three bundles of shingles per square.

Worked example: a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint is 1,200 sq ft. At a 6/12 pitch the multiplier is √(6² + 12²) / 12 ≈ 1.118, so the roof surface is 1,200 × 1.118 ≈ 1,342 sq ft — about 13.4 squares. Adding 10% waste gives ~14.8 squares, or roughly 45 bundles of shingles.

Reference note: this models a simple gable (or simple hip) roof and excludes overhangs, dormers, hips, valleys and ridge/hip caps, which all add surface and waste. Bundle counts assume about three bundles per square; confirm coverage on your specific shingle and follow local building codes.

How do I calculate roof area?
Measure the building footprint the roof covers in plan view (length × width) for the footprint area, then multiply by the slope multiplier — √(rise² + run²) / run, or √(rise² + 144) / 12 for a rise-in-12 pitch. The result is the actual sloped surface area of the roof.
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price and order materials by the square, so a roof with 1,342 square feet of surface is about 13.4 squares. Shingles are usually supplied at roughly three bundles per square.
How does pitch affect roof area?
A steeper pitch makes the sloped surface larger than the flat footprint. The slope multiplier grows with pitch: a flat roof is 1.0, a 6/12 pitch is about 1.118, and a 12/12 pitch is about 1.414. Multiply the footprint area by this factor for the true roof area.
How many shingle bundles do I need?
Most shingles are packaged at about three bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft). Divide the total roof area by 100 to get squares, add roughly 10% waste for cuts and starter courses, then multiply by three and round up to whole bundles.
What is the slope multiplier?
The slope multiplier converts flat footprint area into sloped area. It equals √(rise² + run²) / run, or √(rise² + 144) / 12 for a rise-in-12 pitch. It is the same number as the rafter-length multiplier, because the roof surface stretches by the rafter slope.
Does this cover hip roofs?
It models a simple gable roof, where the two sloping planes together cover the full footprint. A simple hip roof has the same total area for the same footprint and pitch, but complex roofs with multiple hips, valleys, dormers and overhangs gain extra surface — add area and waste for those.
