How this roof area calculator works
The area a roof covers — its footprint in plan view — is smaller than the actual surface of the sloping roof. To get the true roof area you start from the footprint (length × width) and stretch it by the slope of the roof. That stretch factor is the slope multiplier, and it is the same number builders use as the rafter-length multiplier.
For a pitch written as rise-in-12, the slope multiplier is √(rise² + 144) / 12 — more generally √(rise² + run²) / run. Multiplying the footprint area by this factor gives the actual roof surface for a simple gable, where the two planes together cover the whole footprint. Divide that area by 100 to get roofing squares, add a waste allowance (about 10% for cuts, starter and ridge courses), and figure roughly three bundles of shingles per square.
