Pomodoro Timer

Updated July 2026

A free online Pomodoro timer to break work into focused sessions and timed breaks. Start the countdown, let it auto-cycle through focus and breaks, and get a beep when each phase ends. Everything runs privately in your browser.

The Pomodoro Technique breaks work into 25-minute focus sessions separated by 5-minute breaks, with a longer 15–30 minute break after every four. This free timer runs in your browser.

How the Pomodoro Technique works

The Pomodoro Technique is a simple way to protect your attention. You pick one task, set a timer for a fixed focus interval — traditionally 25 minutes — and work on nothing else until it rings. When the focus session ends you take a short break, usually 5 minutes, to rest before the next round. After four focus sessions you earn a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes, then the cycle repeats.

The structure helps in two ways. The countdown creates gentle time pressure that makes it easier to start, and the scheduled breaks stop you burning out by working in one long, unbroken stretch. This timer automates the whole loop: it cycles Focus → Short break → Focus → … → Long break for you and signals each change with a beep.

Worked example: with the default settings you do four 25-minute focus sessions. Each of the first three is followed by a 5-minute short break. After the fourth focus session you take a 15-minute long break. That is 4 × 25 = 100 minutes of focused work plus 3 × 5 + 15 = 30 minutes of rest — about 2 hours and 10 minutes for one full set.

A standard Pomodoro schedule

StepPhaseLengthElapsed
1Focus 125 min25 min
2Short break5 min30 min
3Focus 225 min55 min
4Short break5 min60 min
5Focus 325 min85 min
6Short break5 min90 min
7Focus 425 min115 min
8Long break15 min130 min

Reference note: the timer measures remaining time against a fixed target timestamp, so the countdown stays accurate even if a background tab is throttled. Keep the tab open for reliable beeps and the smoothest display.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pomodoro Technique?
It is a time-management method that breaks work into focused intervals — traditionally 25 minutes — separated by short breaks, with a longer break after every four. Each interval is called a pomodoro, after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer its creator used.
How long is a Pomodoro?
A classic pomodoro is 25 minutes of uninterrupted focus on a single task. You can change the length in the settings if a different interval suits you.
How long should breaks be?
Short breaks are usually 5 minutes after each focus session, and after four sessions you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. Both are adjustable here.
Does the timer keep running in a background tab?
It stays accurate using timestamps, though browsers may throttle background tabs — so keep the tab open. The countdown corrects itself against a fixed target time when you return.
Can I change the times?
Yes. Set the focus, short-break and long-break lengths and the number of sessions before a long break. Changes apply on reset or at the next phase.
Will it notify me?
A beep plays in your browser at the end of each phase, plus a browser notification if you allow it. If you deny notifications it still beeps.
