What roof pitch actually is
Roof pitch is the slope of the roof — how steeply it climbs. It's written as a ratio of rise over run, where rise is the vertical height the roof gains and run is the horizontal distance it travels. The key convention in the US is that the run is always standardized to 12 inches. So a pitch of 6:12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches (one foot) of horizontal run.
