The number of sheets you need is simply the total area ÷ the area of one sheet, rounded up, plus a waste allowance for cuts around doors, windows and corners (10% is typical). A standard 4×8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, so a job is roughly the wall and ceiling area divided by 32.

How this drywall calculator works

Drywall, also called Sheetrock, plasterboard or gypsum board, is sold in flat sheets, so the job is to work out how many sheets cover your walls and ceiling. The principle is simple: sheets needed = total area ÷ the area of one sheet, rounded up. First find the area you are covering. You can enter it directly, or give your room length, width and ceiling height and let the calculator add up the four walls (perimeter × height) and the ceiling (length × width) for you.

Then choose your sheet size. A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 square feet; longer 4 × 9, 4 × 10 and 4 × 12 ft sheets cover 36, 40 and 48 square feet and leave fewer seams to tape. Finally, add a waste allowance: cutting around doors, windows, outlets and corners leaves offcuts that are usually too small to reuse, so you add a percentage (typically 10%, more for rooms with lots of openings) and round up. The calculator also gives rough estimates for joint compound, screws and tape so you can plan a shopping list.

Worked example: a 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings has four walls of 48 ft perimeter × 8 ft = 384 sq ft, plus a 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft ceiling, for 528 sq ft total. Using 4 × 8 ft sheets (32 sq ft) with a 10% waste allowance: 528 × 1.10 = 580.8, ÷ 32 = 18.15 → 19 sheets. Bare, that is 528 ÷ 32 = 16.5 → 17 sheets.

Reference note: results are a planning estimate. The compound figure assumes about one 4.5-gallon bucket per 475 sq ft, screws about 1 lb per 300 sq ft, and tape roughly the area in linear feet of seams — all vary with layout, finish level and technique. This estimate does not subtract door or window openings unless you reduce the area yourself. Measure carefully and confirm coverage on the product packaging before buying.

Frequently asked questions

How much drywall do I need?
Divide the total area you are covering by the area of one sheet, then round up. That is the wall and ceiling area divided by the area of a single sheet, plus a waste allowance for cuts and breakages. Enter your total square footage or your room dimensions above and the calculator returns the sheet count for you.
What size drywall sheet should I use?
The standard sheet is 4 × 8 ft (32 sq ft), which is easy to carry and fits most rooms. Longer 4 × 9, 4 × 10 and 4 × 12 ft sheets cover more area with fewer joints, handy on tall walls and long ceilings, but they are heavier to handle. Pick the largest size you can move comfortably to cut down the seams you have to tape.
How many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room?
A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has about 384 sq ft of walls plus a 144 sq ft ceiling, roughly 528 sq ft. With 4 × 8 ft sheets (32 sq ft) and a 10% waste allowance that is 528 × 1.10 ÷ 32, which rounds up to 19 sheets. Subtract door and window openings for a tighter figure.
How much joint compound do I need?
A common rule of thumb is about one 4.5-gallon bucket of all-purpose joint compound per 475 sq ft of drywall for taping and three finishing coats. It is only a rough planning figure — coverage varies with the number of joints, the finish level and how much you sand off — so round up and keep a little spare.
How much waste should I add?
About 10% is standard for a straightforward room, because cutting around corners, outlets, doors and windows leaves offcuts that are often too small to reuse. Add more — around 15% — for rooms with lots of openings, angles or short awkward walls. The calculator adds whatever percentage you enter on top of the bare sheet count.
Should I include the ceiling?
Include the ceiling whenever you are drywalling it, because its area can rival a single wall and easily adds several sheets. The calculator lets you choose walls only, ceiling only, or both when you enter room dimensions. If you are only patching or skimming an existing ceiling, leave it out and count just the walls.
