How this sleep calculator works
Through the night you move through repeated sleep cycles. Each cycle takes you from lighter sleep into deep sleep and then REM (dream) sleep, and lasts roughly 90 minutes on average. Waking near the end of a cycle — when sleep is lightest — usually feels easier than being pulled out of deep sleep mid-cycle.
This calculator uses that pattern. If you tell it when you want to wake up, it counts backwards in 90-minute steps and adds about 15 minutes to fall asleep, giving you several bedtime targets. If you tell it when you're going to bed, it adds the 15-minute buffer and then counts forwards in 90-minute cycles to suggest wake-up times. Most adults feel best aiming for 5 to 6 cycles, which is about 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep.
Cycles → hours of sleep
| Sleep cycles | Cycle time | Hours of sleep | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 cycles | 6h 0m | 6h | Short night |
| 5 cycles | 7h 30m | 7.5h | Recommended |
| 6 cycles | 9h 0m | 9h | Recommended |
Reference note: 90 minutes is an average — real cycles vary from roughly 80 to 110 minutes and change through the night and with age. Treat these times as helpful targets, not exact predictions.
Frequently asked questions
- How many hours of sleep do I need?
- Most adults do well on about 7 to 9 hours, which is roughly 5 to 6 full sleep cycles of around 90 minutes each. Needs vary by person and age, so use the range as a guide.
- What is a sleep cycle?
- It is one pass through the stages of sleep — from light sleep into deep sleep and then REM (dream) sleep. One cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes, and you go through several each night.
- What time should I go to bed to wake at 6am?
- Counting back from 6am in 90-minute cycles plus about 15 minutes to fall asleep, good targets are around 8:45pm (6 cycles), 10:15pm (5 cycles) or 11:45pm (4 cycles). The 5- to 6-cycle options give most adults a fuller night.
- Why do I feel groggy when I wake up?
- Waking in the middle of a cycle, especially during deep sleep, can leave you groggy — sometimes called sleep inertia. Timing your wake-up near the end of a cycle tends to feel easier.
- How long does it take to fall asleep?
- Many people take about 10 to 20 minutes. This calculator adds a 15-minute buffer to your bedtime so the cycle timing stays realistic.
- Is this medical advice?
- No. This tool is for general education only and is not medical advice. Sleep needs vary from person to person. If you have ongoing sleep problems, speak with a qualified health professional.
